Kourkouas, John
   Brilliant general under Romanos I and Constantine VII (qq.v.) whose victories along the eastern frontier included the conquests of Melitene in 934 and Edessa (qq.v.) in 944. He sent he famous mandylion (q.v.) of Edessa back to Constantinople (q.v.) in triumph. His great Muslim adversary was the Hamdanid ruler Sayf al-Dawla (qq.v.).
